Indications

Skin & soft tissue infections :

Warning & Precautions
"Pseudomemberanous colitis has been reported with nearly all antibacterial agent diagnosed by diarrhea . - Treatment with antibacterial agents alter the normal flora of the colon & may permit overgrowth of clostridia . - If superinfections, amoxycillin should be discontinued & appropriate therapy instituted . - Skin rashes are the most common side effect so it should be used with caution in patients sensitive to penicillin and with known history of allergy ."

Adverse Reactions
" Nausea , vomiting , diarrhea , pseudomembranous colitis Erythematous maculopapular rashes , Stevens – Johnson syndrome , toxic epidermal
necrolysis & urticaria .
- Anemia , thrombocytopenia , thrombocytopenic purpura , eosinophilia , Leukopenia and agranulocytosis (reversible)
- Reversible hyperactivity , agitation , anxiety , insomnia , confusion behavioral
changes & dizziness .and agranulocytosis (reversible)

Contra Indications
A history of allergic reaction to any of the penicillins which may lead to fatal hypersensitivity reactions
Drug Interactions
" Probenecid decreases the renal tubular secretion of Amoxycillin so increased blood
levels of amoxycillin is achieved Chloramphenicol, macrolides, sulfonamides & tetracyclines may interfere with the
bactericidal effect of penicillins .
Pregnancy Amoxycillin should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed .
Nursing mothers :
Penicillins have been shown to be excreted in human milk so Amoxycillin used by nursing mothers may lead to sensitization of infants .
Paediatric use :
Because of incompletely developed renal function in neonates & young infants, the elimination of Amoxycillin may be delayed. Dosing of Amoxycillin should be modified in paediatric patients 12 weeks or younger ( < 3 months )"
